Japan

Japan is a constitutional monarchy in East Asia, governed since 1947 under a parliamentary system in which an elected legislature holds governing authority and the emperor's role is purely ceremonial. The current constitutional order replaced the Meiji Constitution of 1889, an earlier and structurally different constitutional monarchy in which sovereignty rested in the emperor rather than the people, and postwar Japanese politics have been dominated for most of the period since by the Liberal Democratic Party.

Facts
Founding Year
1947 2
1947 is when the current Constitution of Japan took effect, 3 May 1947, establishing the postwar order of popular sovereignty exercised through an elected parliamentary government and a monarchy reduced to a symbolic role. It is offered as the founding of the government presently in place, not of Japan as a state, which has no comparable single founding date this atlas would compress it to: the Meiji Constitution of 1889 built an earlier and structurally different constitutional monarchy, one in which sovereignty rested in the emperor rather than the people, and is narrated in the entity description as a predecessor rather than treated as interchangeable with 1947.
