Algeria is a unitary semi-presidential republic in North Africa. The President serves as head of state while an appointed Prime Minister heads the government; legislative power is shared between the government and a bicameral parliament, the People's National Assembly and the Council of the Nation. The country is governed under the 1976 constitution, since amended in 1979, 1988, 1989 and 1996.
