Kofi Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, the first to rise from within the organization's own staff, and who shared the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize with the United Nations for his work revitalizing the institution. His tenure included the introduction of the Millennium Development Goals and the responsibility to protect doctrine, alongside criticism over the UN's role before the Rwandan genocide and the Iraq oil for food program; he died in August 2018.
