Treaty of Sevres

Treaties and International Agreements

The Treaty of Sevres was a 1920 treaty signed between several of the Allied powers of the First World War and the Ottoman Empire, though never ratified, that would have ceded large parts of Ottoman territory to France, the United Kingdom, Greece and Italy and created extensive Allied occupation zones within the empire. Signed on 10 August 1920 at the Manufacture nationale de Sevres porcelain factory outside Paris, it marked the beginning of the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire, and its harsh terms provoked Turkish nationalist resistance under Mustafa Kemal Pasha, whose Grand National Assembly stripped the treaty's signatories of citizenship and launched the Turkish War of Independence. The treaty was ultimately superseded by the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne.
