American Treaty on Pacific Settlement

Treaties and International Agreements

The American Treaty on Pacific Settlement, known as the Pact of Bogota, was signed on April 30, 1948, at the Ninth International Conference of American States in Bogota, Colombia. It commits its signatories to settle disputes among themselves through peaceful means, requiring them to exhaust regional mechanisms within the Organization of American States before referring a dispute to the United Nations Security Council, and it confers jurisdiction over such disputes on the International Court of Justice. Ratification has been uneven: nine states ratified without reservation, six ratified with reservations, five signed but never ratified, including the United States, and two of the parties, El Salvador and Colombia, later denounced the treaty.
