Nicolas Berggruen, born in 1961 in Paris, is a German-American investor and philanthropist with dual German and American citizenship. He is the founder and president of Berggruen Holdings, a private investment company, and the co-founder and chairman of the Berggruen Institute, a non-profit, non-partisan think tank. With the journalist Nathan Gardels he wrote Intelligent Governance for the 21st Century: A Middle Way Between West and East, published in 2012, which argues that Western democracies have become stymied by populism and short-term thinking.
