1990 Chemical Weapons Accord

Treaties and International Agreements

The 1990 Chemical Weapons Accord, formally the Agreement on Destruction and Non-production of Chemical Weapons and on Measures to Facilitate the Multilateral Convention on Banning Chemical Weapons, was signed on June 1, 1990, by Presidents George H. W. Bush and Mikhail Gorbachev at the White House. The two countries committed to halt production of chemical weapons immediately, begin destroying their stockpiles before 1993, and reduce their remaining reserves to no more than 5,000 agent tons each by the end of 2002, with on-site inspections and data exchange to verify compliance. Both sides also committed to support a future worldwide ban on chemical weapons.
