Tony Blair

Heads of State and Government

Anthony Charles Lynton Blair, born May 6, 1953, in Edinburgh, served as Labour Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from May 1997 to June 2007, the longest continuously serving Labour prime minister and the first to win three consecutive general elections. His government introduced devolved parliaments and assemblies for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, helped broker the 1998 Good Friday Agreement ending decades of conflict in Northern Ireland, and introduced the National Minimum Wage. His decision to commit British forces to the United States-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 proved deeply controversial and significantly damaged his later reputation.
