All Political and Economic Theorists

A philosopher, political scientist, jurist or economist whose lasting significance in this atlas rests on written political or economic thought rather than on holding office. Belongs here: a classical or modern political philosopher such as Aristotle, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Confucius, Mencius, Ibn Khaldun and Al-Farabi, an economic theorist whose work shaped statecraft such as Adam Smith, Jean-Baptiste Colbert and Thomas Mun, and a constitutional or legal theorist whose work is primarily doctrinal rather than the actual drafting of a still standing founding constitution, such as A. V. Dicey and Jean Bodin. Michel Aflaq is filed here as the principal ideologue and doctrinal founder of Ba'athism rather than as an office holder, since he never held top state office himself; this is a disclosed, lower confidence placement made on that reasoning. Does not belong here: a person whose primary legacy is a nation's actual founding constitutional document, filed under Founding Fathers and Constitutional Framers instead, such as Hans Kelsen, principal drafter of Austria's 1920 constitution, who is filed there rather than here despite his standing as a legal theorist.
