The Austrian People's Party, known as the ÖVP, is a Christian-democratic and liberal-conservative political party in Austria. It was founded in 1945, immediately after the re-establishment of the Republic of Austria, as an unofficial successor to the Christian Social Party of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. With the Social Democratic Party of Austria it has been one of the two traditional major parties, and it was the most popular party until 1970. Since January 2025 it has been led by Christian Stocker, at first as acting leader. It holds seats in all nine state legislatures and belongs to the European People's Party.
