Treaty of Trianon

Treaties and International Agreements

The Treaty of Trianon, prepared at the Paris Peace Conference and signed at the Grand Trianon at Versailles on 4 June 1920, formally ended the First World War between most of the Allied powers and the Kingdom of Hungary and imposed the territorial changes that fixed Hungary's post-war borders. Hungary's neighbors had blockaded the country after the armistice, and the Allies dictated rather than negotiated the treaty's terms, which Hungary could only accept or reject in full. The resulting state was landlocked, at 93,073 square kilometers and 7.6 million people retaining only 28 percent of the pre-war Kingdom of Hungary's land and 36 percent of its population, with roughly 3.3 million ethnic Hungarians left as minorities in neighboring states, and the treaty limited Hungary's army to 35,000 men and dissolved the Austro-Hungarian Navy.
