Benjamin Harrison, born August 20, 1833, in North Bend, Ohio, and died March 13, 1901, served as the twenty-third President of the United States from 1889 to 1893, sandwiched between Grover Cleveland's two terms. A grandson of the ninth president, William Henry Harrison, he signed the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890, the first major federal law aimed at curbing monopolistic business combinations, along with the Sherman Silver Purchase Act the same year. His single term also saw the admission of six new states to the Union, more than under any other president: North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho and Wyoming.
