Bill Clinton

Heads of State and Government

William Jefferson Clinton, born August 19, 1946, served as Arkansas Attorney General from 1977 to 1979 and as Governor of Arkansas across two non-consecutive terms, from 1979 to 1981 and 1983 to 1992, focusing on education reform and chairing the National Governors Association, before serving as the 42nd President of the United States from January 20, 1993, to January 20, 2001, with Al Gore as his vice president. Elected in 1992 by defeating incumbent George H. W. Bush and independent candidate Ross Perot, and reelected in 1996, he presided over a period of significant economic expansion, signed the North American Free Trade Agreement and major crime-control legislation, and appointed Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer to the Supreme Court. In December 1998 he was impeached by the House of Representatives on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice arising from his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky; the Senate acquitted him on both charges in January 1999. He left office with one of the highest approval ratings of any American president and has remained active in public life through the Clinton Foundation.
