John Calvin Coolidge Jr., born July 4, 1872, in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, and died January 5, 1933, served as the thirtieth President of the United States from 1923 to 1929, succeeding to office on the sudden death of Warren G. Harding and later winning a full term of his own in 1924. Known as Silent Cal for his famously reserved and taciturn public manner, he presided over a period of sustained economic growth and prosperity often remembered as the Roaring Twenties, pursuing a program of tax cuts and limited federal intervention in the economy. He declined to seek reelection in 1928, reportedly telling reporters simply that he did not choose to run.
