Che Guevara

Revolutionary and Independence Leaders

Che Guevara (14 May 1928 - 9 October 1967) was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary who joined Fidel Castro's 26th of July Movement, sailing to Cuba aboard the yacht Granma, and rose to become a guerrilla commander and Castro's second-in-command, playing a pivotal role in the two-year guerrilla campaign that deposed the Batista regime. In the new Cuban government he served as president of the National Bank of Cuba from November 1959 to February 1961 and as Minister of Industries from February 1961 to April 1965. After leaving Cuba in 1965 he attempted to foment revolutions elsewhere, first unsuccessfully in Congo-Kinshasa and then in Bolivia, where he was captured by CIA-assisted Bolivian forces and summarily executed on 9 October 1967. His image has since become a widely reproduced countercultural symbol of rebellion.
