Stephen Grover Cleveland, born March 18, 1837, in Caldwell, New Jersey, and died June 24, 1908, served two non-consecutive terms as President of the United States, from 1885 to 1889 and again from 1893 to 1897, making him both the twenty-second and twenty-fourth president, the only person in American history to do so. His second term was overshadowed by the Panic of 1893, one of the worst economic depressions the country had yet experienced, which cost his Democratic Party heavily in the following elections. He was known for a reputation of personal honesty and for vetoing an unusually large number of private bills and pension claims he considered unwarranted.
