Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, born November 29, 1955, in Jalalaqsi, has served as President of Somalia since May 23, 2022, his second, non-consecutive term after an earlier term from September 16, 2012 to February 16, 2017. He won the May 16, 2022 election, an indirect vote by 327 members of parliament, defeating outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmaajo. His hold on the office is currently disputed: the opposition argues his mandate expired on May 15, 2026 under the provisional constitution, while Mohamud maintains that constitutional amendments passed March 30, 2024 extend his term to May 15, 2027, and he continues to claim the presidency pending resolution of that dispute.
