The Institutional Revolutionary Party, PRI, took its final name in 1946, the third name of the ruling party Mexican governments had built since 1929, following Lazaro Cardenas's 1938 reorganization of its structure into corporatist labor, peasant, military, and popular sectors. It governed Mexico continuously until its first presidential election defeat in 2000, a seventy-one-year run built on patronage, one-party dominance of state and local government, and periodic repression of opposition movements, most notoriously the killing of student protesters at Tlatelolco Square on 2 October 1968, shortly before Mexico City hosted the Olympics.
