FAQs

Why was Patrice Lumumba removed as prime minister in September 1960?

President Kasavubu dismissed him on 5 September 1960 after he asked the Soviet Union for military help against the secessionist provinces.

Soon after independence, Lumumba faced a revolt of the army and the secession of the provinces of Katanga and Southern Kasai. When he asked the Soviet Union for military help against the secessionist provinces, President Joseph Kasavubu dismissed him from office on 5 September 1960. The Congolese National Assembly ordered Lumumba back in power as prime minister, but a faction of the army under Colonel Mobutu took over the government instead and put him under house arrest. He was later arrested and was assassinated in Katanga in January 1961.
