Theodore Beza (1519 to 1605) was a French Calvinist Protestant theologian, reformer and scholar who played an important role in the Protestant Reformation. A disciple of John Calvin, he lived most of his life in Geneva and succeeded Calvin as the spiritual leader of the Republic of Geneva. His 1574 work The Right of Magistrates, published anonymously as a polemical contribution to the pamphlet literature of the French Wars of Religion, emphatically protested against state tyranny in religious matters.
