Warren Gamaliel Harding, born November 2, 1865, near Blooming Grove, Ohio, and died August 2, 1923, in San Francisco, served as the twenty-ninth President of the United States from 1921 until his death in office. His presidency oversaw a return to isolationist, pro-business policy after the First World War, campaigning on a promised return to normalcy. He died suddenly of a heart attack while on a speaking tour of the western United States; in the years after his death his administration's reputation was badly damaged by the exposure of the Teapot Dome scandal, in which his Interior Secretary was later convicted of accepting bribes in exchange for leasing federal oil reserves to private companies.
