Zhang Chunqiao (1917 to 2005), also spelled Chang Chun-chiao, was a Chinese political theorist, writer and politician. He came to national attention during the late stages of the Cultural Revolution and was a member of the ultra-Maoist group known as the Gang of Four. He joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1938 and after the founding of the People's Republic became a prominent journalist in charge of the Jiefang Daily. His essay On the Abolition of Bourgeois Rights, first published in September 1958 in the magazine Liberation, helped bring him to the attention of Mao Zedong.
