The 2018 Chechnya-Ingushetia border agreement was concluded on September 26, 2018, by Chechen head Ramzan Kadyrov and Ingush head Yunus-bek Yevkurov, and ceded roughly 340 square kilometers, about 9 percent of the territory of Ingushetia, from the Sunzhensky District of Ingushetia to Chechnya, despite earlier 1993 and 2003 agreements pledging to keep the existing boundary. The deal set off widespread protests in Ingushetia, and its own Constitutional Court initially struck it down on October 30, 2018, ruling that any territorial change required voter approval, only for the Constitutional Court of Russia to overturn that ruling in December 2018. Renewed protests and clashes with police in March 2019 eventually led Yevkurov to resign as head of Ingushetia on June 24, 2019.
