Adriatic Charter

Treaties and International Agreements

The Adriatic Charter is a partnership formed in Tirana on May 2, 2003, by Albania, Croatia and North Macedonia together with the United States and under American sponsorship, to help its members prepare for and pursue membership in NATO. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro joined in December 2008, and Serbia, Kosovo and Slovenia later joined as observers. The original members of the charter have gone on to join NATO in stages, Albania and Croatia in April 2009, Montenegro in June 2017 and North Macedonia in March 2020, leaving Bosnia and Herzegovina as the only founding member still outside the alliance.
