The Austro-Russian Alliance was concluded in May and June 1781 between the Habsburg monarchy under Joseph II and the Russian Empire, replacing an earlier alliance between Russia and Prussia as Russian policy under the influence of Grigory Potemkin turned toward the Ottoman lands to the south. The new alignment left the Russo-Prussian alliance formally in place but largely without significance, and it helped draw Austria and Russia into the Austro-Turkish War of 1788 to 1791 and the Russo-Turkish War of 1787 to 1792. The partnership proved fragile in the end, and by 1790 Russia had withdrawn its support for the interests of Austria and declined to become involved in a possible Austro-Prussian conflict.
