Basic Treaty, 1972

Treaties and International Agreements

The Basic Treaty was signed on December 21, 1972, in East Berlin between West Germany and East Germany, formally recognizing each other as independent states for the first time under the Ostpolitik of Chancellor Willy Brandt. It established permanent missions functioning as de facto embassies rather than full diplomatic relations, and it opened the way for both German states to join the United Nations on September 18, 1973. Formal diplomatic relations between the two states remained suspended until German reunification in October 1990.
