Anglo-French Convention of 1898

Treaties and International Agreements

The Anglo-French Convention of 1898, signed in Paris on June 14, 1898, and formally titled the Convention between Great Britain and France for the Delimitation of their respective Possessions to the West of the Niger, and of their respective Possessions and Spheres of Influence to the East of that River, fixed the boundaries between British and French territory in the disputed Niger and northern Nigerian region, completing a major phase of the partition of West Africa. Ratifications were exchanged on June 13, 1899, and a supplementary declaration signed on March 21, 1899, clarified the Article IV of the convention covering spheres of influence in northern Central Africa and Sudan in the aftermath of the Fashoda Incident.
