Treaty of Lausanne

Treaties and International Agreements

The Treaty of Lausanne is a peace treaty negotiated at the Lausanne Conference of 1922-1923 and signed at the Palais de Rumine in Lausanne, Switzerland, on 24 July 1923, resolving the conflict that had persisted between the Ottoman Empire and the Allied powers since the First World War. It emerged as a second attempt at peace after the 1920 Treaty of Sevres was rejected by the Turkish National Movement, following the Turkish victory in the Greco-Turkish War and the October 1922 Armistice of Mudanya that provided for an exchange of Greek and Turkish populations. Turkey ratified the treaty on 23 August 1923 and it entered into force on 6 August 1924, alongside a declaration of amnesty for crimes committed between 1914 and 1922.
