The Decade Before the Arrest

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

Rosa Parks is remembered for a single evening, 1 December 1955, but her arrest that day was not the first civil rights work of an otherwise uninvolved seamstress. It was the most consequential act of more than a decade of organizing that had already made her one of the most experienced activists in Montgomery.

Parks became secretary of the Montgomery chapter of the NAACP in 1943, a position she used to investigate specific cases of racial violence against Black Alabamians, including the case of Recy Taylor, a Black woman gang raped by white men in 1944 whose attackers were never indicted after a grand jury declined to bring charges, and the case of Jeremiah Reeves, a Black teenager executed in 1957 for a relationship with a white woman that he said was consensual. Parks also worked to register to vote at a time Alabama made that deliberately difficult for Black residents, succeeding on her third attempt in 1945.

Her refusal to give up her bus seat on 1 December 1955, and the arrest that followed for violating Montgomery's segregation ordinance, drew on that same organizing background rather than arising from it spontaneously. The Women's Political Council, a Black women's civic organization that had been documenting bus segregation complaints and planning a boycott response for months before Parks's arrest, called a one day boycott for 5 December, the date of her trial; after her conviction, the boycott continued under the Montgomery Improvement Association for 381 days.

Reading Parks's arrest as an isolated act of individual defiance, the popular version of the story, obscures how prepared both Parks and the wider Montgomery Black community already were to turn that one arrest into a sustained campaign. The readiness came first. The arrest gave it an occasion.
