The Atlantic Charter was a statement of postwar aims issued on 14 August 1941 following a meeting between United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill aboard ship in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, from 9 to 12 August 1941. Originally titled the Joint Declaration by the President and the Prime Minister, it set out eight aims including no territorial aggrandizement, respect for self-determination, restoration of self-government to occupied peoples, freer trade, economic cooperation, freedom from fear and want, freedom of the seas and disarmament of aggressor states; nations that adhered to it signed the Declaration by United Nations on 1 January 1942, laying groundwork for the United Nations, and it later influenced the founding of NATO and postwar decolonization.
