The Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 4 November 1972 and took effect on 16 December 1972, drafted by a 34-member committee chaired by Kamal Hossain after the assembly, elected in Pakistan's 1970 polls, convened in the wake of the Bangladesh Liberation War. It establishes Bangladesh as a unitary parliamentary republic founded on four principles drawn from Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's political philosophy: nationalism, socialism, democracy and secularism; an interim government formed after the 2024 uprising has since moved to reform or rewrite it.
