The Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil, commonly the 1988 Federal Constitution, is the supreme law of Brazil and the foundation of the federal government's legal authority. It replaced the 1967 constitution that had capped twenty-one years of military dictatorship, and its drafting during Brazil's transition to democracy produced a broad system of human and individual rights protection, social welfare guarantees and democratic tools.
