The Constitution of the Arab Republic of Egypt currently in force was approved by referendum in January 2014 and took effect on 18 January 2014, replacing the 2012 constitution enacted under President Mohammed Morsi; it was itself amended by a further referendum held 20 to 22 April 2019. It establishes Egypt as a unitary semi-presidential republic with legislative, executive and judicial branches, building on the framework first set out in the Egyptian Constitution of 1971.
