The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was enacted on 29 May 1999, establishing the Fourth Nigerian Republic and last substantively amended in January 2011. It creates a federal presidential republic of three branches, a bicameral National Assembly, a president as executive head and a Supreme Court, organizing the country into 36 states, a federal capital and 774 local government areas, and it frames equality in terms of citizens rather than the broader personhood language used in many other constitutions.
