The Constitution of the Russian Federation was adopted by national referendum on 12 December 1993 and entered into force on 25 December 1993, abolishing the Soviet system of government and replacing the 1978 constitution of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Its text was drafted by the 1993 Constitutional Conference, with Sergei Alexeyev and Sergey Shakhray considered its primary co-authors, and it was substantially amended in 2020 in changes touching presidential terms, social policy and the relationship between Russian and international law.
