The Federal Constitution of the Swiss Confederation is the third and current federal constitution of Switzerland, adopted by referendum on 18 April 1999 and replacing the prior 1874 federal constitution, which it was intended to modernize without changing its substance. It establishes the Swiss Confederation as a federal republic of twenty-six cantons, sets out a catalogue of individual and popular rights including the right to call referendums on federal laws and constitutional amendments, and delineates the responsibilities of the cantons and the federal authorities of government.
