Legitimation Crisis is a 1973 book by the philosopher Jurgen Habermas, published in English in 1975 by Beacon Press in a translation by Thomas McCarthy. Its title refers to a decline in confidence in administrative functions, institutions or leadership, a legitimation crisis; the direct translation of the German title is Legitimation Problems in Late Capitalism. Published five years after Knowledge and Human Interests, the book explores crisis tendencies in state-managed capitalism, contrasting an earlier capitalism concerned primarily with maintaining the market economy against a state-managed capitalism in which states take on additional roles such as healthcare, pensions and education.
