India's first general election under its new constitution, held over four months from 25 October 1951 to 21 February 1952 and the largest exercise of universal suffrage yet attempted anywhere, with some 176 million eligible voters, most of them casting a ballot for the first time. The Election Commission of India, established in January 1950 under Chief Election Commissioner Sukumar Sen, organised the vote across a mostly rural and largely illiterate electorate. The Indian National Congress won a commanding majority, and Jawaharlal Nehru became independent India's first elected prime minister.
