Saied Administration

The Saied Administration is the government of Tunisia led by President Kais Saied, an independent politician who took office on October 23, 2019, and won a second term in October 2024 with 90.69 percent of the vote, being inaugurated on October 21, 2024. On July 25, 2021, Saied suspended parliament and dismissed his prime minister in what scholars have characterized as a self-coup, subsequently ruling by decree; a new constitution approved in July 2022 with 94.5 percent support then formally expanded presidential authority, and Saied went on to dissolve the Supreme Judicial Council, arrest opposition figures including former prime ministers, and impose criminal penalties for spreading what the government deems false information, actions observers have described as democratic backsliding. Because the 2022 constitution concentrates real executive power in the presidency rather than dividing it with an independently empowered prime minister, this entity is filed as a presidential administration rather than a semi-presidential government, a contested placement call given Tunisia's earlier, more balanced 2014 constitutional order.
