This group holds heads of state and government of the countries of Western Asia, commonly called the Middle East, among them Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and the smaller Gulf and Levant states, together with the Caucasus and Central Asian states of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Central Asia is folded into this group rather than given its own listing because the atlas's oversized-subcategory report proposes no separate Central Asian group and the region's combined membership here remains modest.
