This group holds heads of state and government of Mexico, the countries of Central America, the island nations of the Caribbean and the countries of South America, from Argentina and Brazil to the smaller Caribbean states such as Saint Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda. Mexico and Central America are placed here rather than under North America because the atlas's proposed regional split names only eight groups for this subcategory and keeps Northern America limited to the United States and Canada, following the common Latin America and the Caribbean grouping used elsewhere in general reference geography.
