Direction - Social Democracy, commonly called Smer, is a left-wing populist and left-wing nationalist political party in Slovakia that identifies as social-democratic and is led by its founder, Robert Fico. Fico founded it in 1999 as a split from the post-communist Party of the Democratic Left, and it first defined itself as the Third Way party. It added Social Democracy to its name after merging with several minor centre-left parties in 2005. It has dominated Slovak politics since 2006, leading three coalition governments and one single-party government from 2012 to 2016, and Smer-led governments have been associated with several corruption scandals.
