The European Parliament is the European Union's directly elected legislative body, sharing lawmaking and budgetary authority with the Council of the European Union under the ordinary legislative procedure, and electing and scrutinising the European Commission. Its predecessor, the Common Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community, first met on 10 September 1952; it was renamed the European Parliamentary Assembly when it first met jointly for the three Communities on 19 March 1958, and became the European Parliament on 30 March 1962. Its first direct elections were held on 7 and 10 June 1979. It holds monthly plenary sessions in Strasbourg, with committee work in Brussels and its administration (the Secretariat) in Luxembourg.
