Nazi Party

The National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nazi Party) was founded in 1920, growing out of the German Workers' Party, and built around Adolf Hitler's leadership from 1921. Its program combined virulent antisemitism, ultranationalism and anti communism with promises to reverse the Treaty of Versailles. After the Reichstag Fire in February 1933 and the March 1933 Enabling Act, the party dismantled Germany's constitutional order, banned rival parties, and established a one party totalitarian state. Nazi Germany's rule from 1933 to 1945 included the militarized expansion that began the Second World War in Europe and the Holocaust, the systematic murder of six million Jews and millions of Roma, disabled people, political prisoners and other targeted groups. Its leadership was tried at Nuremberg after the war for crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
