The Organisation of African Unity was a continental body established on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, by 33 independent African states, working to promote unity and solidarity among African states, coordinate cooperation for development, defend sovereignty and territorial integrity, and eradicate colonialism. Recognising its limited enforcement powers, its members adopted the Sirte Declaration in September 1999 calling for a deeper continental union, and on 9 July 2002 its chairman formally dissolved the OAU and replaced it with the African Union.
