The People's Action Party, known as the PAP, is a major political party in Singapore. It was established in 1954 as a conventional centre-left party, and after its initial electoral success in 1959 Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew repositioned it toward the centre, expelling its leftist faction, which reorganised as Barisan Sosialis, in 1961. The party continued to shift toward the centre-right, and after Singapore became independent in 1965 it secured all parliamentary seats in the 1968 general election, which most opposition parties boycotted. It remains the dominant party in Parliament, followed by the opposition Workers' Party, and has consistently formed the executive branch of government.
