Abdelaziz Bouteflika was an Algerian politician who served as President of Algeria from 1999 to 2019, one of the longest presidential tenures in Africa. Elected after Algeria's civil war with military backing, he was credited with ending much of the country's internal conflict through an amnesty program, but was later criticized for entrenching one party rule and, after a debilitating stroke in 2013, for governing largely out of public view. He resigned in April 2019 after weeks of mass protests against his bid for a fifth term, and died in September 2021.
