Omar Abdourahamane Tiani, born January 1, 1964, in Toukounous, Filingue Department, seized control of Niger in a military coup on July 26, 2023, detaining President Mohamed Bazoum, and led the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland junta that followed. He was formally inaugurated as the 11th President of Niger on March 26, 2025, nearly two years after the coup and without a competitive election. He remained in office through a mutiny attempt by soldiers in Niamey in August 2026. He is known for anti-imperialist and pan-Africanist positions, and his rule is widely described as authoritarian.
