Abdullah II has served as King of Jordan since February 7, 1999, succeeding his father, King Hussein. As head of state of a constitutional monarchy in which the king retains significant executive authority, he appoints the prime minister and government, commands the armed forces, and has played a prominent role in Middle Eastern diplomacy, including on the question of Palestinian statehood.
