Sir Alexander Frederick Douglas-Home, born July 2, 1903, and died October 9, 1995, served as Conservative Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from October 1963 to October 1964. Previously the 14th Earl of Home, he disclaimed his hereditary peerage under the Peerage Act 1963 so that he could sit in the House of Commons and become prime minister, succeeding Harold Macmillan. His premiership, one of the briefest of the twentieth century, ended when he lost the October 1964 general election to Labour's Harold Wilson.
